Wat wil de toerist en kan het toerisme in het betreffende land voldoen aan deze verwachtingen? 'Veel landen zeggen dat ze big spenders willen, maar zo werkt het niet. Vaak moet je heel concreet kijken wat er wel en niet kan. Je ziet nu in veel landen het 'voluntoerisme' opkomen, vrijwilligers die bij de lokale bevolking overnachten en daar verhoudingsgewijs veel geld opleveren. Dat levert voor de bevolking veel meer op dan de grote resorts. Daarvan vloeit het meeste geld weer terug naar de organisatie.' Goof de Jong in Zimbabwe herkent deze trend nu het land weer als veilig wordt gezien. 'Er melden zich veel jonge mensen die graag hun steentje bij willen dragen, bijvoorbeeld in een van de vele weeshuizen', zegt hij. Reisleider Bram Vergeer krijgt op de reizen in Ethiopie regelmatig het verzoek om een bezoek aan een weeshuis te regelen, voor veel reizigers een zeer heftige ervaring.
